About

I celebrate my birthday on or about Thanksgiving each year. In 2010, I turned fifty-six. Yes, I remember the days when dinosaurs ruled the earth. I was born in Southern California, but, as an Army-brat, I got to live in all four corners of the US as well as several cities and towns in Germany. I attended thirteen different schools from 1st grade through 12th, and my senior year was the only one that started and ended in the same school.

After leaving home at seventeen, I dabbled at being a university student – good times, not so good grades, spent three years in the Air Force, lived and studied in Denmark, and, just before settling in Portland, lived and worked in Wales and England.

These days, my hobbies are mostly book, film, and music related. I used to be crazy about sports, but big money (and the greed and excess that it inspires) has ruined the appeal of most games for me.

    Hi,

Just wanted to say thanks for a brilliant website. I live in England, not far from the original home towns of Slowdive, Ride etc and have been a massive fan of shoegazing from the begining. I probably saw Slowdive around 20 times and Ride more like 30 in the heyday of showgazing. I have a huge collection of showgazing music, right upto more modern bands (some of them on your excellent Vibrato compliations) and I’m at the early stages of writing a book about the history of the genre.

Its people like you that keep this music alive and I’ve discovered some bands I hadnt heard of through your website.

So thanks and keep up the good work.

    John

Thank you, John, for taking the time to let me know that you have enjoyed reading the blog and listening to the music. I think I would very much enjoy hearing some of your recollections of the original Shoegaze scene.

  2. Hello,
I couldn’t find another way to contact you. I’ve read your blog and really liked the work you put into it. I’m a big music fan and wanted to start my own music blog. And since I’m french it would be in french. But i haven’t found bands willing to be interview by a non existing blog yet. I was wondering if you would allow me to translate some of your interviews in my native language for the french people to enjoy. and help me starting my blog. I wuld give you al credis and put links to your original work. I would do it for passion.

Also, I love The great Wilderness.

    Hey there,
I’m a UK based shoegaze fan wishing to submit some music to your fine blog for listening/possible writing about (providing, of course, you deem it acceptable!) and I was wondering what the best way would be to get some music in your hands/ears ?

    Cheers, joe x

  5. Really great blog. Your site has opened me up to lots of new bands.
